When chimps from the north transitioned from near quadrupeds to bipeds, some began to slip and slide on frozen pools of water. It didn't take very long for some of those chimps to begin hitting frozen bits of mud and dung at each other with bowed branches.

Needless to say- one day a chimp put a metal blade on the bottom of a boot, and the rest as they say, is history. Darwinian history anyhow.
